31:31

31:31 marks the final collection of original works released by Annette Peacock to date. Beyond this, only 4 Emilia-Romagna W/LV—a live recording from a concert in Italy—would follow.
From what I gather, the songs on 31:31 were performed live and later overlaid with additional layers, creating the impression of an intimate, almost clandestine session—lo-fi in texture, yet rich in presence. There’s a rawness here, a sense of something unpolished and immediate, like music taking shape in the quiet focus of a private room.

Some songs of the album can still be found drifting across YouTube, though the full work remains elusive.

AN ACROBAT'S HEART

Manfred Eicher, founder of ECM, extended an invitation to Annette: to compose and record an album for voice, piano, and the Cikada String Quartet. What emerged is a rare and haunting work—measured, contemplative, and steeped in a kind of timeless clarity. This is a record that breathes slowly, unfolding like a thought held in silence. The poetry is stark and luminous, the pacing deliberate, as if time itself were being stretched to allow each phrase, each note, to fully resonate. Though the songs may seem disarmingly simple at first glance, they are intricately woven—each gesture precise, each silence purposeful.

A short documentary made during the recording process offers a rare glimpse into the stillness and concentration behind its making—an atmosphere as evocative as the music itself.

Listen to it here.

Mia's Proof

We play our own music, we sing our own song.
I made my own music for right or for wrong.
I heard my own heartbeat with men I have loved.
And gave myself to them till children were born.

I seek only peace and success for my child.
Belief in themselves as a fatherless child.

I weep for the souls who will not seek the light.
And struggle within till I give up the fight.

The fight is: reluctance to let go of hope.
Perfection's invented to please us at last.

tho dreams are desire
with intention to act,
they're so far away
with one's feelings
unpacked.

We play our own music, we sing our own song.
I made my own music for right or for wrong.
I heard my own heartbeat with men I have loved.
And gave myself to them till children were born.

And children are proof
of the love that we lived.
Tho lives have been
broken with gifts
in their hearts.

***

Tho

Tho i love u darling, I love happiness more.
So I can't give u my heart, tho it's u i adore.
U can dream. U can hold on 2 a dream that's unreal.
Say u love none above me, and imagine all i feel.

Tho i need u darling, I need freedom much more.
So I can't give u myself, tho it's u i adore.
U can plan. U can hold on 2 a plan u make true.
U can call, or choose not 2, and b living just 4 u.

All we can trust is the pleasure we share.
Intimate blessings caress,
while we R there.
Making it sweet 4 the x that we steal.
+ing the x zones to feel,
heals separateness.

Tho i miss u darling, it is I, I miss more.
So i can't give u my x, tho it's u i adore.
When u go u will hold on 2 the hope till it's cold.
Know your love should have saved me,
if my heart could have been brave.
Tho my heart would have behaved,
if your mind were not enslaved.

All we can trust
is the pleasure we share.
Intimate blessings caress.
while we R there.

weightless

Show me
how to love you.
Under
and above you.
Bare
weightless glove of you.
Made of light and air.

Teach me how
to please you.
thrill you and
increase you.
touch you and
release you.
Present as
prayer.

Share our innocence and sweetness.
Share our graces and courage.
Our strenght and our dreams.
Our strenght and our dreams.
Show me
how to love you,
Angelman.

***

Over.

Over. Every end
a new start. Every bend
of winter brings
you to the new spring.
Every crown a new king.
Every loss a new find.

Over. Every fear
I'm facing, takes
me to a new place.

And when mine
was yours, I'd shine
for you.
Remember
how we grew into
the dream that lived
until we killed
love. Betrayed
our hearts'
fulfillment.

Attraction thrilled
our dance,
like poetry
to romance.
Till love became a season,
a system of behaviors.
A ritual of reason
deprives the self of truth
and innocence, innocence.

When love was in its youth,
you were my prince.

***

as long as now

Come to me. You dream me. Now
& now & now as long as now will
ever b, b with me. I adore thee. Here
with me while I cherish u. I cheer u,
& comfort u, & please u in these
stolen moments of out history.
As we discover affinity & trust
completely. Completely fearless.
This is a promise. Honesty is so sexy.
So is bravery. Come 2 me. You've
dreamed me true.

***

u slide

A lover's promise.
The mother's kiss.
Tho tears will
dry, and souls as
high, as hearts
can go, expand,
while eye to eye
and hand in hand.

We teach
ourselves to make
the chains we reach
to break.

Forsake the truth
if sly will buy
or steal some love,
but know not of
or why
the thing we seek
can live,
then die.

We know those
words to speak
that get us next
to another's skin.
Then close our
minds to the din
of an opening
heart, without
remorse.
So on that
smooth and seamless,
prideful course
of choice your ego
made ago,
alone
u slide.
Till one
gray day
inside
a voice
may say,
"A coward's way
to go. I robbed
and cheated
myself of love
I needed.
I was not
brave enough to know,
brave enough to show,
or keep
a lover's promise",
(the mother's kiss).

b 4 u said

That I know
my soul is
being seen, more
than hoped for.

And that others
every time
only spoke,
"I love you."

Almost broke
me half-bro-
ken.

That you know
my soul
healed me,
has saved me,
and freed me.

I was lost
in the dead

The heart keeps

No matter how I keep on trying
my thoughts won't stop about you.
It's just a lie I keep denying.
I can't control my response to you.

I intruct my mind stop dreaming.
I instruct my body stop needing you.
The heart keeps leading me
back to you. The heart keeps
leading me back to you,
(leading me back to you).

Why can't my eyes stop
seeing all they see.
And my senses
sending your beauty.
And my brain
recording memory.
And the information
playing me.
I tell myself.
I tell myself.
Thru all of the doubt
and all of the fear.
Past all of the time
and all of the space.
The heart keeps
taking me back to you,
taking me back to you.

So place
and time's
untrue.

My heart
and I'm
with you.

ways it isn't

I want 2 try 2 love again. I think i know how
2 love now. I know all the ways is isn't. No
winning, no losing in love. Longing 2 tell u,
"I can c your beauty." And, "It's been hard 4
me 2 c any1's beauty b4, 4 a long x." No taking,
no giving in love. Truth is all i have 2 live on,
have 2 trust and 2 4give on. Saving me, brave
in me. Had never known love, and so we never
knew what it was, but then no1 else did. Still,
we all were willing 2 try. No lying , no blaming
in love. No hurting, no stopping in love.

***

Safe

My soul searches thru universes for you, but I can't say
"I love you" out loud. Cause if I do, I might believe it too.
I don't feel sure enough to lose control.

My body is burning, turning on to you, but I won't say
"I need you" out loud. This war within could really weaken me.
The flow with life and love should fit me like a glove.

At ease the trees
receive the sun
with no suspense.
While I manu-
facture reasons
that don't make sense.

My brain's showing feature films. The close-ups
of only you, portray you more ideal than true. It feels
so safe behind the fantasy. And much more difficult
when you are real.

***

Free the memory

Take the sum of your own tears.
multiply by unknown years.
You've been so brave, unafraid.
Underneath you bare
the wounded child.

Walking wounded can't rewrite
the story told they hold so tight.
Play the part they must relive.
Do not forget, do not forgive.

We do all that we can do
to survive what we're put thru.
here in this cool, ruthless
worlds. Too unsafe
to show the wounded child.

There's no gain when we encore
the painful past forever more.
Nothing real for us to score.
The love that's lost,
we can't restore.

Let if fall. Let it perish.
Free the memory we cherish.
here in this blind,
careless worlds.
Where our kind,
create the
wounded child.

I want 2 show u

I want 2 b
who i show u.

I want 2 know
your thoughts b 4

We R all
we need
of each other.

All, there is, ever

Dual mutuality.

Camille

When you're not here
within me
the mem'ry
is all I can feel.

I'm lost and found
in rev'rie.
I really am Camille.

Recalling the sense of you
is all I care to do.

Inventing a way to you
thru the abstinent blue.
Thru the obstinate blue.
To the bone, blue
for you.

You make the
song you, true,
when the feeling's too
strong. I go on
till the dawn
restores me.
Exploring
your mystery.
Marking my way to you.
Thru the deeper than
dark bitter blue.

I'm lost and found
in rev'rie. The mem'ry
is all I can feel.
When you're not here
within me. I really
am Camille.

Recalling the sense of you
is all I care to do.

ABSTRACT-CONTACT

In Abstract-Contact (1988), the music veers into sharper territory, departing from the fluid contours of Annette’s more recent previous works. Here, the sound grows firmer, more angular—anchored by defined rhythms and deliberate structures. The lyrics, too, shift: they become taut, incisive, unapologetically political.

This political—always present and inseparable from the personal—now feels like a pointed gesture, a steady hand naming names, lifting veils without hesitation. In Elect Yourself, for example, the voice cuts through with clarity, baring the brutal logic of capital:

“The rich do not make profit
to empty their pockets
to the poor.
It doesn’t pay a free-market
to have a socio-eco
conscience unless
it is embarrassed
or penalized into it.”

Amid this sharpness, there are moments of luminous defiance. Happy With My Hand rises like a small anthem of self-fulfilment—radiant, humorous, and resolute in its joy. A celebration not of escape, but of presence.

Listen to the music here.

Lost In Your Speed

It’s the quality of

the how in the love

not the what that we spend

or the why you intend

If the who that we are

is as much as we give

then the secret we share

is the more that we care

And I’m lost in your speed

out of control

And the way it all feels

far surpasses ideals

still remains unexplained

yet it can’t be restrained

If the promise we tie

is our life not a lie

where the future begins

when the fantasy wins

And I’m lost in your speed

out of control

And when you’re gone

has the amputation done me harm?

A sense of loss so strong

my whole body’s sending

something’s wrong.

Existing in some place

I persist in but I don’t belong.

When you’re gone

and I’m lost in your speed.

Through the changes and pain

more than warmth more than gain

is the best we can be

for each other to see

It’s a test it’s a trial

and a question of style

if the truth in the proof

is we’ve won and undone

And I’m lost in your speed

out of control

And when you’re gone

has the amputation done me harm?

Elect Yourself

About those who are not

poor without hope. And

the betrayal runs deep.

Youth

in its garment of

tight-fitting skin

discovers, decorates

and observes

it admires itself

deserves and

requires others

to admire itself

and romance

awakens dancing the

now of the night away

to the big-hard-sound

of its own independence.

And full they are

with themselves

and desire

and each other

and the future

and of the future they are

wanting everything

all at once

in fast forward.

In fast forward

their mommys

and daddys play

spend, waste, trade,

gamble

they be biting tomorrow

in broad daylight away

systematically selling out

every implicit, heritable

ecological right

as if they had the right.

On a guess

of yes or no

life and death

wait in the balance.

Making concessions

of rectification

on a diminished scale

in order to sustain

the better way of living.

And brand new brains

distain

but remain

behind designed

realities

parade their convoluted

emotions, presumptions

and trad-attitudes

along the capitalistic

avenue of affluence

among the negated

neighborhoods of their

biological brothers

and sisters.

The what or why

you do or do not have

can or cannot buy

is your identity

the fundamental

social relevance.

If each anxiety

reacts to its own

subjective reality

still some must be

willing to take less

in order that others

may also have those

certain inalienable

rights.

An ordinary, mandatory

involvement with money

vetoes the natural

civil possibilities.

Each generation grows up

and turns their remarkable

marketable youth into

sold out sold to older

at a younger age.

Innocence and enthusiasm

are prime targets

and commodities.

A complacent

deliberated-desperateness

insidious

like an endemic disease

spreads among

representatives, advocates

of the language of image

who communicate

the gospel of image

in a visual protest era

with an exponential need

to have not forgotten

how to feel real

about being angry.

Grass grows

singing green between

the cracks of the dead

paved-grey city.

A trees urge to live

takes root on the small ledge

between the stories

of a crumbling building.

On the streets

the body, the rap, the beat

celebrate perpetual life

and a new language

arises again out of

de-o-repression

dangerous

and glorious.

It speaks of freedom

anonymously

on the canvas of the city.

The personal revolution

defines its fight

its expression

its weapon

and guns shoot colours.

Like a sacred scripture

a cry from the heart

trains scream

"It's not an obscenity

to be free.

It is a divine right."

And walls shout eloquently

"What fools we are

to fall so far

from the truth."

Hope

is the expectation

or positive personal control

overs the factors

that govern our lives.

The compulsion

when self-destruction

or truculent

visiogenic revolution

as therapeutic outrage

is the only possible

effective option.

And tho it is real time

and true, true

that we are intrinsically

intimately

alone inside our

own insistent skins

within a selective

hypocritical, unscrupulous

negligent

rotten to the core system

that perpetuates

the acceptable lie

even tho everyone

knows the truth

(because a society

benefits from it)

the moment you

you truly

become a victim.

And the sentiment

you'll feel for everything

Most people

surrender their responsibility

to government, management

Christ, family, reality.

Settle, succumb

to cry over their

battlefields in the

sweet-comfortable-sourness

of acceptable dissolutionment.

Move

at the speed of

social approval

when nothing changes

but appropriate appearance

altering to what's amusing

for those who can afford it.

The rest remaining

the dispensating same.

The dilettantis skill

is agility, flexibility

and that it's important

to be seen

to be frivolously bored

The martyrs go on bearing

the pain of tearing

the lies from their eyes

glaring at the

intolerable truth, because

besides lobotomy

there is no other

possible way to continue.

you get salvation.

But the cross

An ideal is an ideal

(De la guerra a la salvacion)

From war to salvation

profitability is the

essential entertainment.

Economic power

is political objective,

ecumenical motivation.

Christianity and capitalism

(el padre y la madre de)

the father and mother of

There is no

only management

of power and profit.

There is no

there is only tradition.

There is no

only conditioning

(the human mind is a victim

We Are Adnate

We are adnate

This is the primo reality!

What we subtract from

Our priority is

Disparate X's

We share the same difficulties

but we cope in disparate ways.

You blame them on someone else

or something outside yourself

(understandable tho apparently

inefficient).

I observe, react, collect

information, adjust

alternating behaviors

(compulsive about

personal improvement).

We speak the same language.

You react to your emotion.

You use the same words.

They’re not relative to action.

How can the exchange be pleasurable

each with their own motive?

How can the experience be comfortable

each with their own objective?

How is it possible

and why is it popular

to isolate the sexuality

from a personal humanity

and then intend sincerity

with the body?

The coming from

imagery in uncontrolled consciousness

that lets the tension in the muscle go

and sets the alpha flow

in motion

is the quickest way to god I know

but it’s not love

only one type of opportunity

to love

in these disparate x’s.

The complicity for each others

need to survive

is active loving

in the contemporary tense.

Superficial ritual

sacrifice or guarantee

are not necessary
